Brian

Howdy! As you may have guessed, I'm Brian, the administrator of Intense Cogitation. I do all of the backend management and a majority of the writing on the website. I was a May 2010 IB Diploma candidate, and I ended up with 40 points. Overall, I'd say my experiences in the IB were some of the best I've ever had in my life, despite the hardships, the all-nighters and the never-ending mountain of homework. Any questions or comments? Let me know!

How Not to Write an IB English Essay: An Example from Jack and the Beanstalk

In our early days in IB English, we were encouraged to write practice essays in order to improve our own essay-writing skills. Our teacher gave us an excerpt from Jack and the Beanstalk, and we had to devise individual topics. I decided to choose the idea of Jack being rewarded as my central focus. As [...Read more...]

A Comedic Look at the United States

(Click for full size) Just saw this on Reddit. This is apparently how the United States looks like from a European perspective. IB grade boundaries are minimum boundaries for a certain number grade in a specific category for a subject. For example, if 32 out of 40 was the boundary for a 7 in Paper 1 of Chemistry HL, then one would have to get 32 or above to obtain a 7 on that paper. Pretty straight [...Read more...]

For those with dual-boot (or above) systems, the Windows partition often contains many files that we have been unable or too lazy to migrate to our Linux partitions. Therefore, being able to access this partition is an important issue. The ntfs-3g program for Linux allows us to do that quite easily. However, as I quickly [...Read more...]

Excellent American Civil War at Sea Revision Resources

Whilst I was doing my Extended Essay on the American Civil War, I was fortunate enough to come by these excellent resources on the naval aspect of the American Civil War. These resources helped me immensely on my Extended Essay. These resources are mostly books, so you may have to go to your local university’s [...Read more...]
